I'm pleased to announce the publication of my seventeenth Elm Creek Quilts novel, The Union Quilters, which goes on sale today.
In 1862, the men of Water's Ford, Pennsylvania, rally to answer Mr. Lincoln's call to arms, spurring the women of the Elm Creek Valley into their own battle to preserve the nation. Dorothea Granger, dismayed by her scholarly husband's bleak descriptions of food shortages and illness in the soldiers' camps, marshals her friends to “wield their needles for the Union” and provide for the men's needs. Her friend Constance Wright staunchly supports her husband as he is repeatedly turned away from serving in the Union army because of the color of his skin, determined to help him secure both the privileges and the responsibilities of citizenship. Anneke Bergstrom's pacifist husband does not enlist, but his safety becomes her shame—and compels her to work ceaselessly for the Union cause to prove her family's loyalty. A gifted writer committed to hastening the end of the war, Gerda Bergstrom takes on local southern sympathizers in the pages of the Water's Ford Register, risking the wrath of the Copperhead press—and the jealous wife of the regimental surgeon she loves.
Please visit my website for more information about The Union Quilters, including a preview of Chapter One. While you're there, go to the Events section to see if my book tour will bring me to a town near you, and click on the “Quilts Gallery” link to see a photograph of Dorothea's Dove in the Window, a quilt that plays an important role in the story.
The pins I designed for A Quilter's Holiday and The Aloha Quilt were so popular that I decided to create a new pin to celebrate The Union Quilters:
You can receive one of these limited edition pins if you come see me on my book tour from February 22-March 11. I'll be visiting several of my favorite shops and libraries across the country and will give away a pin with each copy of The Union Quilters you have me sign, while supplies last. For book tour locations, dates, and times, please see the Events page on my website.
Can't make it to one of my events? The wonderful booksellers at the Next Chapter Bookshop in Mequon are ready to help. If you order The Union Quilters from the Next Chapter Bookshop website, they will include a The Union Quilters pin with your book when they ship it to you. I will autograph the books when I visit the store on March 7, 2011, so all orders need to be placed before then. If you would like your book to be personalized, please be sure to indicate the name of the person to whom the book should be addressed.
Quantities are limited, so make your plans to attend one of my book tour events or place your order with the Next Chapter Bookshop soon.
Thanks, and Happy Reading!
